Half-Day Guided Kayak Trip

$160 per person

Awaroa is the perfect base to start a half-day sea kayak adventure. We have immediate access to the Tonga Island Marine Reserve and the Awaroa Lagoon, both offering top-class sea kayaking with a remote feel not experienced in the southern end of the park. The marine reserve trip explores the bays south of Awaroa where we view stunning granite sea cliffs, view marine life thriving in a pristine marine ecosystem, and sea birds diving and foraging for food. The lagoon offers sheltered paddling conditions with stunning scenery, secluded beaches, the chance to see eagle rays feeding on the seafloor, and a range of sea birds feeding on the sandy banks.

Where we go and what we see will depend on the weather and tides of the day. Our guides are more experienced than anyone working in this part of the park and strive to deliver the best possible trip they can on the day. Bookings are recommended to avoid disappointment, especially in the peak season (December – February).

All of our guided kayak trips last for 3-3.5 hours, including a pre-trip safety briefing and a 20-30 minute stop on a secluded beach. We break up the trip by the guide providing interesting commentary at notable points of interest along the way. The trips include hot drinks and snacks on the beach, as well as photographs taken by the guide throughout the trip. No experience is required for any of our trips, but we do enforce a minimum age of 12 years.

Stand-up paddleboarding is a fun way to experience the Abel Tasman National Park, and Awaroa Bay is the perfect place to try it. Warm, clear water and golden sandy beaches provide an ideal environment to search for eagle rays foraging on the seafloor and soak up the scenery in a stress-free way. All participants need to attend a mandatory safety briefing and there are some restrictions as to where and when you can go.

Bookings required; minimum age 8 years.

“Fantastic kayak trip in a stunning location. Josh was great and put together a wonderful alternative trip when the weather and currents conspired against us. Highly recommend the lagoon – very surreal to kayak and then later walk across the inlet.”

How Should We Plan?

The Abel Tasman National Park is famous for long sunshine hours and warm sea temperatures, but we are always prepared for changing conditions on the open ocean. We recommend bringing a thermal top and bottom base layer in case the day is cool, however, we tend to find people are usually comfortable in shorts and t-shirts. A warm fleece or wool layer for the top half is useful and can be stored in water-tight hatches if we don’t need them. Sun glasses, hats, water bottles, and cameras are all must-haves. We supply all paddling equipment, including waterproof ‘dry bags’ to store valuables and cameras. Excess luggage and packs/boots can be locked at our base during the trip.
